The Memories

I try to focus on reminders of loved ones I miss rather than that ache in the heart and the longing. I recall some of the things that remind me of them and it brings me some comfort. Sometimes these reminders pop up out of the blue and it’s most often smells or sounds that are familiar, somewhere from the back of my mind. Lately I’ve been trying to be more aware when these appear– hoping that actively remembering will prevent me from losing these memories altogether, and keep them close and comforting.

This Memorial Day is not the same-- there is no parade, nor marching band, the city will not gather in the cemetery together for a ceremony of honor and remembrance, and there will be fewer hugs and family gatherings. But that doesn’t mean we cannot reflect and honor.

Our mother is our first comforter, healer, cheerleader, protector and teacher. We learn from her before we are even aware we are doing so, by observing and absorbing.

The Matriarch

The MatriarchBy: Jennifer Burchill Published on: 05/04/2024

One year instead of a birthday gift from my parents, I chose a birthday trip to visit my Great Aunt Charlotte. At this time Great Aunt Charlotte held the regal title of the Matriarch and I wanted to interview her, and find out what I could of what she remembered of our family members and record it. My mom accompanied me and had some questions of her own too, and her mother was no longer around to ask.
